Inquiry Based Learning

This week, we had Trevor Mackenzie come and join our class. Trevor is a well known advocate for inquiry based learning and is currently teaching in Victoria. During his presentation to our class, he shared a diagram with us from his coworker Rebecca, to help differentiate the types of student inquiry we can use in our classrooms.  As a future educator, inquiry based learning has been something has been that I wanted to integrate into my classroom.

One aspect of Trevor’s presentation that I really enjoyed was when he talked to us about student engagement for inquiry learning. He discussed using methods  such as differentiation and 1-on-1 meetings to help build relationships with our students. Without knowing your students, it is hard to build inquiry projects that will gain their interest. Another aspect that Trevor spoke about was provocation. Provocation, as he explained, is an intentional story, image or GIF that is meant to spark wonder and curiosity.
